Catriona Boffard
Clinical sexologist & psychotherapist
My Story
My journey in becoming a clinical sexologist started when I was studying psychology at the University of the Witwatersrand. After graduating from undergraduate psychology, I decided that the field of sexual health was where I wanted to be working. I focused all my studies on this field and spent time volunteering as a counsellor at a sexual and reproductive health care clinic in Johannesburg to gain experience. After completing my Masters in Psychology at the University of the Witwatersrand, I undertook a Masters in HIV, STIs and Sexual Health Counselling through the University of Sydney. I gained invaluable experience during this degree through professional placements at My Sexual Health Pretoria, and Porterbrook Sex and Gender Clinic (NHS) in Sheffield, UK. I opened my private practice in Johannesburg in 2013.
In 2014, I successfully passed the European Society of Sexual Medicine/ European Federation of Sexology’s certificate to become one of only a few South Africans who are European certified Psychosexologists. However, I knew that I wanted to study further and live abroad again. So, in 2015 I moved to London and completed a PGDip in Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT). During this time, I worked as a CBT therapist in the public health sector at an NHS Talking Therapies facility. Once I had obtained this qualification, I spent a year working at The Priory North London, a high-profile psychiatric hospital, treating clients individually and in group therapy for extreme mood, anxiety and personality disorders, as well as couples experiencing sex and relationship distress. During this time, I also ran a successful private practice in Central London, seeing clients for psychosexual concerns.
In 2018, I decided to return to South Africa, recognising the lack of available services in psychosexual therapy. I practice from an integrative perspective; never viewing two clients’ concerns as the same. I believe in assessing, formulating and treating my clients from a holistic approach, meaning that I use my knowledge of medicine, psychology and sociology to understand someone’s concerns. I find being able to assist individuals or couples who are struggling with any concerns in the areas of sex or relationship to be incredibly rewarding, and I am passionate about empowering people in their sexuality and assisting couples in re-establishing intimacy.
