Fatima Omar teamMy Story

The Couch Light

My journey as a clinical psychologist begins with me initiating a degree in Psychology. During this time my passion for helping people led me to volunteering as a lay counsellor at the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG). I also volunteered my services at the Teddy Bear Clinic, assisting and catering for the needs of abused children.

I graduated with a Masters degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of the Witwatersrand. I am a member of the Golden Key International Society, a society honouring academic excellence. I was also privileged enough to present an academic paper at the International Congress of Psychology in Cape Town in July 2012. I serve as a member of the South African Psycho-Analytic Institute (SAPI) and the Psychological Society of South Africa (PSYSSA).

As a student psychologist, I trained at the University of Witwatersrand Emthonjeni Centre. During my time at the Centre, I trained in various aspects of psychotherapy and psychiatric diagnosis along with assessment techniques.

I began my internship, at the Tara H Morris Institute (Ward 4and Ward 5) in Sandton where I worked in a specialised inpatient unit. The unit had a set programme that helped individuals to foster coping skills and to assist them in understanding their emotions. I trained in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) whilst at this unit.

I completed my internship at the Chris Hani Baragwaneth Hospital in Soweto where I worked in an acute psychiatric unit providing individual and group therapy for individuals with various psychiatric disorders including bipolar mood disorder, schizophrenia, depression and anxiety disorders.

I also completed my community service year at the Chris Hani Baragwaneth Hospital in Soweto. A highlight for me during my community service year was having the opportunity to play an instrumental part in developing and implementing a coping skills group in Ward 46 (female inpatient) to assist patients struggling with poor coping skills. My repertoire of therapeutic skills increased during this year as I trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).

I am passionate about helping individuals with difficulties and I am committed to providing a warm, supportive,

empathic and confidential environment tailored to suit each and every client.
